THE OPPORTUNITY

 As the Charge Technologist – Ultrasound, Mammography & PACS, you will play a pivotal leadership role in overseeing the daily operations and performance of the ultrasound and breast imaging services, while also managing administrative responsibilities for the Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) within the Diagnostic Imaging Department.

Reporting to the Manager of Diagnostic Imaging & Laboratory Services, you will be accountable for ensuring the delivery of safe, high-quality imaging services, efficient workflow management, and compliance with professional and accreditation standards. In addition to performing advanced ultrasound and mammographic procedures for inpatients, outpatients, and emergency cases, you will provide clinical leadership, technical expertise, and mentorship to technologists and students.

Your responsibilities will also include administration of PACS and related imaging informatics: monitoring image flow, facilitating troubleshooting technical issues, ensuring data quality and integrity, collaborating with IT and vendor support, and supporting users with training and workflow optimization.

Operating within departmental protocols and organizational values, you will model professionalism and excellence for the team, ensuring all duties are conducted in accordance with the Standards of Practice established by the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO) and the Regulated Health Professions Act.

  • KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Support and promote the hospital’s mission, vision, values, and the GBGH Code of Conduct in all interactions.
  • Oversee day-to-day operations in ultrasound and mammography; coordinate workflow, room utilization, and staffing coverage to meet patient demand.
  • Provide clinical leadership, mentorship, and orientation for technologists, students, and co-op participants.
  • Collaborate with Radiologists, Diagnostic Imaging leadership, and the Quality Lead to maintain accreditation, compliance, and best practices standards.
  • Lead or support departmental quality initiatives, audits, and process improvements.
  • Perform or oversee high-quality ultrasound and mammography for screening, diagnostic and interventional purposes accordance with GBGH protocols and regulatory standards.
  • Prepare exam rooms and imaging equipment (ultrasound and mammography); adhere to infection prevention, radiation/ultrasound safety, and patient safety protocols.
  • Review imaging requisitions for accuracy, clinical relevance, and appropriateness; clarify orders as required.
  • Explain procedures clearly and compassionately; obtain informed consent and answer questions within scope of practice.
  • Position and instruct patients to ensure safety, comfort, dignity, and optimal image quality.
  • Troubleshoot equipment issues, coordinate preventative maintenance and service, and maintain accurate equipment logs.
  • Assist with patient care tasks (lifting, turning, positioning) while upholding dignity and safety.
  • Ensure accurate image production, storage, retrieval, and distribution through PACS.
  • Monitor and resolve PACS exceptions and support image routing and workflow integrity.
  • Act as primary liaison with IT, vendors, and radiology teams for PACS-related issues, upgrades, and optimization.
  • Provide user support and training on PACS functions.
  • Generate reports and statistics from PACS to support operations, quality monitoring, and accreditation.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, committees, and hospital initiatives related to imaging and quality improvement.
  • Maintain accurate documentation, including patient demographics, requisitions, imaging records, and equipment logs.
  • Order and manage departmental supplies; verify stock levels and expedite replenishment when necessary.
  • Demonstrate accountability for professional, ethical practice aligned with hospital policies, legislation, and CMRITO standards.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and punctuality to support consistent patient care.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Diagnostic Imaging leadership to support safe, efficient operations.
  • Carry out all duties in accordance with the Standards of Practice of the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario and the Regulated Health Professions Act.

 

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
The ideal candidate will possess the following key competencies, record of experience and academic preparation:

  • Current registration in good standing with the College of Medical Radiation and Imaging Technologists of Ontario (CMRITO).
  • Membership in good standing with CAMRT and/or OAMRT preferred.
  • Completion of Mammography I and II courses preferred
  • Certificate in Breast Imaging – Screening (CBIS) preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of combined experience in Mammography and Ultrasound, with demonstrated leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated clinical competency in mammography (including interventional procedures) and diagnostic ultrasound examinations.
  • Recent experience with the Ontario Breast Screening Program (OBSP) and High Risk OBSP Program preferred.
  • Experience with PACS administration, including troubleshooting, workflow monitoring, and user support, considered an asset.
  • Strong knowledge of ultrasound and mammography imaging principles, anatomy, techniques, and equipment operation.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Quality Control and Quality Assurance programs, with the ability to identify and recommend process improvements.
  • Current BCLS certification preferred.
  • Demonstrated initiative, accountability, problem-solving, and strong organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to adapt to change in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development and continuing education.
  • Demonstrated commitment to high-quality, patient-centred care.
  • Reliable attendance and flexibility to work various shifts across GBGH campuses as required.

  • Hourly rate of pay $44.66 - $56.30, plus a generous vacation allotment in accordance with the OPSEU Collective Agreement.

HOURS OF WORK
Permanent Full Time. Shifts would include rotating days, nights, weekends, and holidays. Shifts and hours may change according to departmental requirements and as per the OPSEU collective agreement.
